It happened in a small village in the hills above Taormina, before Elena Hart was born. Until a letter from Palermo arrived in Chicago, she had no reason to think the village had anything to do with her.
Now her grandfather, a man she didn’t know, has left her a stone house there. Elena expects paperwork and a quick sale, and finds instead a place where the past is still close at hand: in photographs on old walls, in the pause before someone answers, in a story that changes a little depending on who is telling it.
Her mother left Sicily long ago and has never said why. Elena begins to wonder whether the two are connected, and why, in all these years, no one has ever told her.
