SILENZIO

The Road · Stop I of XII

Chicago

Where the road begins: in an ordinary evening, in a life that knows exactly what comes next.

The lights below the window come on at the same hour every evening. I have always liked that. Tonight the post was heavier than usual.

Chicago

The story so far

This is Elena Hart. Thirty-two, a financial analyst, a woman who likes to know what tomorrow will bring — and usually does. Her evenings have a shape: the city lights coming on below the window, Marcus at the stove, a message from her mother waiting on her phone.

Tonight, between a catalogue and a note from the building manager, there is a cream envelope. Her name is written by hand. The postmark says Palermo.

The place

A city that keeps its promises.

A city that keeps its promises.

By evening, the lake wind has found its way into every street. People draw their coats closer and hurry beneath the tracks; a train passes overhead, briefly swallowing the sound of everything below.

Elena likes this hour. Office windows lighting up. The smell of coffee escaping each time a café door opens. That first warmth when she steps inside her building and the heavy door closes against the wind.

Upstairs, there is enough room to leave the day behind. Marcus loosens his tie. She slips off her shoes. Beyond their windows, thousands of other evenings are beginning.

She has never wondered what her life might look like somewhere else. There has always been another week to plan here.

From chapter one

The letter arrived on a Tuesday, between a catalogue she had never asked for and a notice from the building management about window cleaning.

Elena almost threw it away.
